Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is above all a view of the dynamic of what's consciousness and not conscious relations among perception, meaning and action. It works with the idea that becoming conscious is painful and that pain motivates a resistance the style of which is sustained by the present, with habits that were adaptive in the past. It affirms the findings in developmental neurology that there is a rich fugue-like interplay among the themes of consciousness and the many parts of neural functioning, fear, metabolism, ecstasy.(Omaya)

I take it that its possible to do what Eric Erikson called "putting psychoanalysis on the couch." That it, and any cultural theme, can be psychoanalyzed.

The technique is, start anywhere, watch the conversation, be aware of resistance, continue....

It is an attitude, it does not depend on the couch or the hour of the finances or the relationship. This follows because it can be done with one's own self. (remembering what the Chinese sage said, "we spend most of our time worrying about our self, and there is none.")

The result of such an open reflective conversation is, , as David Hume said "The truth emerges from conversation among friends." It is slow, Tao like, and hot, Hamlet like.
